2024/25 – a new concert season

The phenomenal pianist Víkingur Ólafsson is the Konserthuset's Artist-in-Residence for the upcoming season. The Icelander is now one of the world's hottest pianists, and at his solo recital in the Konserthuset earlier this year, where he performed Bach's Goldberg Variations, it was sold out.

Now, Víkingur Ólafsson returns to the Konserthuset no less than three times during the same season, partly as a soloist in Brahms' two piano concertos with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and to give another solo recital, this time featuring Beethoven's late piano sonatas.

Ryan Bancroft takes on his second season as Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra this autumn. Both musicians and audiences, as well as critics, agree that the choice of the young American has been a real stroke of luck, it resonated throughout the music world, and more people around the world are now taking notice of Bancroft.

In spring 2025, Ryan Bancroft and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra will also embark on their very first joint European tour, along with, among others, Nina Stemme (Gothenburg, Munich, Cologne, Hamburg, Dortmund, Luxembourg, and Vienna). Among all the soloists appearing with Ryan Bancroft and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra next season, mention can be made of the great violinist Maxim Vengerov, who returns to the orchestra in May 2025 after 30 years!

This year's International Composer Festival is dedicated to the Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan, one of the truly great figures of our time. His music combines striking emotional power with spiritual concentration, rooted in his Catholic faith. Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft conducts the festival opening. Also, don't miss Bancroft conducting a modern classic by James MacMillan as a prelude this spring (24 & 25 April 2024).

The legend Herbert Blomstedt – who turns 97 this summer! – returns to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also the one leading the season opening in September, conducting two personal favourites: Franz Berwald and Johannes Brahms.

The Blue House Jazz season kicks off with the incredibly versatile and charismatic artist Cécile McLorin Salvant. In addition to jazz, she touches on vaudeville, blues, folk, and baroque music. She brings with her an experienced trio. For the first time, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will also participate in Blue House Jazz, in a meeting between the orchestra and pianist John Beasley and multi-instrumentalist Magnus Lindgren.

The high-quality piano series features an impressive lineup of today's great pianists, including Grigory Sokolov (of course, he has been coming for his October concert for 20 years), Igor Levit, and Leif Ove Andsnes. As usual, the members of the orchestra showcases its spirit of discovery in concert series like Philharmonics Up Close and the Soup Concerts, which include plenty of unusual music alongside well-known classics. The same goes for Monday at Last, with Cecilia Zilliacus and Kati Raitinen at the helm. And in New Friday, the exploration of contemporary music continues, including the 40th anniversary celebration of KammarensembleN.

Baroque enthusiasts will find satisfaction in the immensely popular concerts with Orpheus Baroque Stockholm – which in the upcoming season, among other themes, follows in the musical footsteps of Queen Christina. The Lied concert series, led by Magnus Svensson, offers a range of Swedish and international top singers, including Dame Sarah Connolly and Johanna Wallroth. Magnus Svensson also performs a concert with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra worth noting: in November, he is the soloist in Adolf Wiklund's masterful first piano concerto.

The String Quartet series – also very popular – features leading quartets such as the Takács Quartet and the Belcea Quartet along with some young and exciting debutants in the genre.
