She was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon and she had a dream – to become the first black woman to play piano in Carnegie Hall. But racism in the US after the war halted the musical prodigy.
Instead, she became a jazz, pop and soul singer at a shabby nightclub in Atlantic City and adopted the name Nina Simone to avoid shaming her family. It was the beginning of musical history’s most extraordinary artistry. Nina Simone had an incredible ability to take care of others’ songs and fill them with her own strong, personal expressiveness.
At this performance we will get to hear some of Sweden’s leading jazz musicians perform an entire suite of Nina Simone’s best known songs. Bob Dylan’s Just Like a Woman; Jacques Brel’s Ne me quitte pas; Gershwin’s I Loves You, Porgy from Porgy and Bess; and, via Nina Simone’s interpretation, the emotionally powerful and politically charged Ain’t Got No – I Got Life, and many more.
