Aaron Copland’s Third Symphony occupies a special place in twentieth-century American music. Written during the final years of the Second World War, it brings together the European symphonic tradition and the musical language that has become so strongly associated with Copland: open sonorities, wide intervals, rhythmic energy and a sense of vastness.
Here, Copland brings the sound world of works such as Appalachian Spring and Fanfare for the Common Man into the expansive form of the symphony. The music has both power and lyrical breadth, as well as striking contrasts between the intimate and the monumental.
In the finale, Fanfare for the Common Man emerges, at first restrained and then with the full force of the orchestra. Copland uses the fanfare’s motif as the starting point for the development of the entire movement, carrying the symphony towards a magnificent conclusion. The work has often been seen as an expression of optimism and faith in the future after the dark years of the war.
