Organ Matinee with Joakim Andersson
Planets and falling leaves – English, Swedish and German Romanticism.
The popular organ matinée series, featuring some of Sweden’s foremost organists, has grown steadily in recent years. The organ at Konserthuset Stockholm, with its magnificent façade, is one of Europe’s most iconic – and with 6,100 pipes, also one of the largest.
Joakim Andersson has been organist at Engelbrekts Church in Stockholm since autumn 2024. Prior to that, he was organist at the Staffan Church in Gävle and a prominent figure in the city’s musical life.
The concert opens with music by English composer Gustav Holst: an organ arrangement of Mars, the haunting movement from his orchestral suite The Planets. Between Holst and the German composer Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s Drei Impressionen, we hear a short piece by Swedish composer Sara Wennerberg-Reuter: När löven falla (“When the Leaves Fall”). Like her contemporary Karg-Elert, she studied with Carl Reinecke in Germany, and also pursued composition studies in Berlin with Max Bruch.
Joakim Andersson, also active as a composer, concludes the programme with his own Staffan Rhapsody.
