Soup with Violin and Piano

Brahms’s Rain Sonata and a beautiful romance by Amy Beach.

The American composer Amy Beach (1867–1944) was widely recognised during her lifetime, but like so many other women composers, she was not given the same opportunities as her male colleagues. Fortunately, her music is now enjoying a well-deserved revival. One example is her exquisite Romance, which was such a success at its premiere – performed by Beach herself together with violinist Maud Powell – that the audience demanded an immediate encore.

Johannes Brahms was in the postcard-perfect village of Pörtschach am Wörthersee when he composed his enchantingly romantic First Sonata for Violin and Piano – one of the great masterpieces in the repertoire for the duo. It is sometimes referred to as the Rain Sonata, as Brahms reuses a theme from his own song Regenlied (“Rain Song”) at the end.

Emma Agnas de Frumerie, violinist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, performs together with Peter Friis Johansson – one of Scandinavia’s most acclaimed concert pianists. He is a regular guest at Konserthuset Stockholm, most recently in 2024 with a solo recital in the Main Hall.
