This time, the invited guest is Eija Kankaanranta – a leading soloist on the Finnish national instrument, the kantele, who has also arranged all the works in this programme.
The kantele is more than 2,000 years old and was once believed to have the power to enchant all the creatures of the forest. Its shimmering, beautiful sound is showcased here in newly composed works by Juhani Nuorvala and Lotta Wennäkoski, as well as music by Finland’s national composer Jean Sibelius. The instrument’s virtuoso potential is revealed in a version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations for kantele, violin and cello.
The beautifully atmospheric music of Japanese composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto has captivated millions of listeners around the world. Among many other projects, he composed music for several video games and was awarded an Oscar for the film The Last Emperor (together with David Byrne). He also wrote more intimate works, such as A Flower is Not a Flower for piano, which is heard here in an arrangement for kantele, violin and cello.

This time, the Monday guests are cellist Andreas Brantelid, violist Albin Uusijärvi and violinist Marcus Bäckerud.
Andreas Brantelid made history in 2006 when he became the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious Eurovision Young Musicians competition. Since then, he has performed with leading orchestras around the world, earning acclaim from both critics and audiences. Here, he is the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations in a version for cello and string quartet – virtuosic and imaginative music inspired by Mozart’s elegant, playful style.
Also on the programme is American composer Amanda Harberg’s energetic On the Edge for two cellos, and a lyrically expressive and intense Sonatina for Violin and Cello by Swiss-French composer Arthur Honegger, who spent most of his career in France. The concert also features Finland-Swedish composer Pehr Henrik Nordgren’s powerful String Quintet – given extra weight by its double cello parts.

This time, the series welcomes violinist Minna Pensola – known for her musicality, energy, and her all-in performance style – and the versatile Antti Tikkanen, heard here on both violin and viola. Together, they form the duo Tiksola.
In this concert, they showcase their phenomenal ensemble playing in a programme with a Finnish flavour. We’ll hear lively polskas from Ostrobothnia and an intriguing duo by fellow Finn Lotta Wennäkoski. In the company of violinist Cecilia Zilliacus, they also perform trios by Juha T. Koskinen. And when joined by both Zilliacus and Kati Raitinen, Duo Tiksola expands into a quartet to perform Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen’s Third String Quartet.
This rich and varied programme also includes a romantic sonata by Polish-born Russian composer Mieczysław Weinberg, along with delicate songs arranged for two violins by Minna Pensola. We’ll also hear Georg Philipp Telemann’s charming Gulliver Suite, inspired by Jonathan Swift’s contemporary novel Gulliver’s Travels. The concert concludes with Duo Tiksola’s own version of Paganini’s famous 24 Caprices.

This time, the guest is Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson.
Alasdair Beatson combines a career as one of Britain’s leading chamber pianists with regular solo appearances – often in a highly varied and adventurous repertoire. In recent seasons, he has performed several times at London’s Wigmore Hall, alongside artists such as cellist Steven Isserlis and violinist Viktoria Mullova.
Here we hear him in a series of exciting duos with Cecilia Zilliacus and Kati Raitinen: Benjamin Britten’s Suite for Violin and Piano, Ravel’s homage to his fellow countryman Gabriel Fauré – and to demonstrate just how deserved that homage was, also Fauré’s First Cello Sonata and Allegretto. The Allegretto, originally for two cellos, is performed here in an arrangement by Kati Raitinen for violin and cello.
Alone at the piano, Alasdair Beatson performs Piano Figures – ten exquisite miniatures for solo piano by George Benjamin. The concert concludes with Debussy’s impressionist masterpiece La mer, in a piano trio arrangement by acclaimed British composer Sally Beamish.
