This Friday features two world premieres! Swedish composer Jenny Hettne often creates her music in close collaboration with musicians and is known for her imaginative approach to drawing out new sounds from traditional instruments. Her new work is titled Mycorrhizal Network – a reference to the symbiotic relationship between fungal mycelium and the roots of plants!
Internationally active Ivo Nilsson is a leading figure in contemporary music. As a trombone soloist, he has premiered numerous works, and as a composer, he has created music ranging from powerful drama to striking intimacy. His new piece is titled Pneuma, a word that signifies both air in motion and the breath that is essential for life. In Greek tragedy it refers to the breath of life, and in the New Testament it stands for the Spirit.
The concert opens with British composer Piers Hellawell’s Sound Carvings from the Bell Foundry – a melodically exploratory and at times explosive work composed for Stockholm Chamber Brass, who also gave its world premiere in 2006.

This evening brings together two leading Swedish musicians with distinguished international careers, in a programme of new Swedish music.
Saxophonist Anders Paulsson made his Carnegie Hall debut in New York in 1992 and is regarded as one of the foremost saxophonists of our time. His playing has inspired a wide range of composers to write for him, and he has premiered more than 100 works.
Guitarist Jacob Kellermann is constantly seeking new expressive possibilities for his instrument. This has led to a deep engagement with contemporary music and close collaborations with numerous composers. He is also a member of – and one of the founding members of – the internationally active New European Ensemble.
Here, Kellermann and Paulsson perform music by some of Sweden’s most prominent composers. The programme includes a world premiere by Andrea Tarrodi, and Ett skepp kommer lastat (“A Ship Comes Laden”) by Britta Byström, written for and dedicated to the duo. Thomas Persson’s Sonata No. 2 was also composed specifically for Paulsson and Kellermann.
Bo Hansson is internationally known for his choral music – but here we hear Interact. Also featured are Ballade by Anders Nilsson, a modern romantic, and Thomas Lindahl’s Fabula – the Latin word for story or tale.

The ensemble Lipparella constantly initiates new collaborations to explore the intersection between the sound world of Baroque instruments and the musical language of our own time. The group often works with singers and instrumentalists in various projects. At this concert, the focus is on the vocal, with soprano Alexandra Büchel – one of Sweden’s leading interpreters of contemporary music – as soloist.
Composer Jennifer Walshe is also a vocalist and frequently performs both her own works and those of others. Her music is performed around the world, and she currently serves as Professor of Composition at the University of Oxford. In her Something that is Continuous, a soaring soprano line floats above a delicate tapestry of sound. The programme also features music by British composer Christopher Fox, whose Musica su quattro dimensioni explores harmonic depth and rapid melodic lines.
Composer and cellist Chrichan Larson is a well-known figure in the European contemporary music scene, both as a performer and creator. His music is elegant, often tinged with impressionistic colours and delicate yet intense melodic textures. In his Czarne latawce (Black Kites), the vocal line shifts between spoken-word style and traditional singing. The work is based on texts by the Polish Nobel laureate Czesław Miłosz.

At this concert, we meet ensemble neo – a group that, since its founding nearly twenty years ago, has been at the forefront of exploring new ways of writing and thinking about music. The ensemble works continuously with composers, both nationally and internationally, and has premiered over 400 works to date.
In this performance, ensemble neo presents music inspired by the written word. Composers have long listened closely for literature’s whispers, while the written word seeks its reflection in music. As long as stories are told and poems written, composers will find inspiration in language – even when the words are neither sung nor spoken, their meanings resonate in the sound itself.
The programme includes Tree of Water by Chinese-born composer Ying Wang, now based in Berlin. “It’s a poetic and beautiful title that fits this context perfectly,” says Ying Wang.
