In less than a decade, the ensemble has become a dynamic and creative meeting point – not only for Philharmonic musicians with expertise in early music, but also for many of Sweden’s leading baroque performers. Artistic directors are Johannes Rostamo, principal cellist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and lutenist Jonas Nordberg.
Under the banner Orpheus' Treasure Trove, the ensemble presents itself in a smaller format. In this programme, we meet the two artistic directors themselves – cellist Johannes Rostamo and lutenist Jonas Nordberg – in solo works for lute and cello.
Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687–1750) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) knew each other and moved in similar musical circles in Germany. They are documented to have met on at least one occasion – and reportedly improvised together. Weiss is renowned for his lute music and was one of the foremost virtuosos of his time. Bach’s fame, of course, is far-reaching, but here the focus is on his solo cello music. The cello is also closely associated with the Italian composer Domenico Gabrielli (1659–90), one of the first to write solo works for the instrument.

This was Handel’s very first oratorio, composed in 1707 during his time in Italy. The music was commissioned by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj, who also wrote the libretto. With its allegorical narrative and richly expressive music – inspired by Italian opera – the work foreshadows Handel’s later and more widely known oratorios, such as Messiah and Saul.
This is one of Handel’s most fascinating early works – a milestone in the Baroque oratorio tradition – exploring timeless themes of life’s transience and spiritual awakening. Beauty (Bellezza) is a young woman tempted by Pleasure (Piacere), while Time (Tempo) and Disillusion (Disinganno) urge her to understand that worldly delights are fleeting, and that true fulfilment lies in wisdom and inner insight.
The music of Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno is filled with vibrant arias and expressive recitatives. It features some of Handel’s most beloved melodies – most famously the aria Lascia la spina, cogli la rosa, which he later reused in his opera Rinaldo as the even more well-known Lascia ch’io pianga.
The soloists are French soprano Emmanuelle de Negri, Swedish mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg, Spanish countertenor Carlos Mena, and Swedish tenor Martin Vanberg. Orfeus Barock Stockholm has, in less than a decade, become a dynamic and creative force in Sweden’s early music scene. The ensemble is led here by Spanish conductor and harpsichordist Julio Caballero Pérez.

It tells the story of the brave knight Saint George, who saves a city from a fearsome dragon. The legend has inspired artworks and music throughout the centuries – including the famous sculpture of Saint George and the Dragon in the Great Church (Storkyrkan) in Stockholm’s Old Town.
This concert features music from the Swedish and Danish Baroque eras. Sweden’s Age of Greatness was marked by a flourishing cultural life, with composers such as Johan Helmich Roman – “the father of Swedish music” – helping to shape a distinct Swedish Baroque identity. Around the same time, Carl Michael Bellman created his inimitable songs, capturing life’s shifting moods with humour, depth and a vivid sense of storytelling.
From Denmark and the German territories then under the Danish crown, we hear music by Dieterich Buxtehude – one of the most influential figures of the North German Baroque. The programme also includes works by John Dowland, the master of English Renaissance song, whose melancholy and intimate music was appreciated at the Nordic courts. The versatile Norwegian baritone Bernt Ola Volungholen appears as guest soloist.

Under the Orpheus’ Treasure Trove banner, the ensemble is presented in a more chamber-like format.

Her recordings have been praised by international critics and awarded virtually every major distinction imaginable. She regularly appears on the world’s foremost stages and at prestigious festivals.
Now she visits Konserthuset Stockholm to lead Orfeus Barock in a programme devoted entirely to the string music of Antonio Vivaldi. We journey to Venice, where Vivaldi was born and spent most of his life. He was primarily active as a violinist, composer and music teacher at the Ospedale della Pietà – a renowned home for girls and music school – where he composed many of his concertos.
Amandine Beyer has recorded a significant portion of Vivaldi’s music, notably with her own ensemble Gli Incogniti. Their recordings – of The Four Seasons, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s string symphonies, and Corelli’s Concerti grossi, among others – have been hailed as new benchmarks. In addition to her concert career, Beyer is a sought-after pedagogue and teaches Baroque violin at institutions including the renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland.

Blending characteristics of both woodwinds and brass, it remains one of the most fascinating instruments in music history.
The cornett takes centre stage as French virtuoso Lambert Colson joins Orpheus Baroque. Under the title Cavalieri Imperiali – Knights of the Imperial Court – the programme highlights two of the 17th century’s great cornett masters: Luigi Zenobi and Giovanni Sansoni. Both served at imperial courts in Europe and earned reputations that far exceeded their time. They were particularly admired for their ability to make the instrument sing almost like the human voice.
The programme offers a glimpse into the world of these cornett masters, with music by composers such as Orlando di Lasso, Dario Castello and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. It’s a vibrant and captivating era brought to life through cornett, violin, trombone and basso continuo.
