But Tegnér also composed other works, including choral music and chamber music. Her distinctive gift for captivating melodies is evident in her sonata for violin and piano, which is also rich in dramatic passion and melodic charm.
Romantic composer Robert Schumann was driven by a deep love for both literature and music. His marriage to Clara was passionate and had a profound impact on his work. The fact that he also suffered from severe depression at times adds to the image of the emotional and fragile artist. His stormy yet beautiful third violin sonata was written just months before his tragic suicide attempt. He spent the remainder of his life in a psychiatric institution.
Performers are Amus Kerstin Andersson, associate principal of the second violins in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, together with the orchestra’s pianist, Stefan Lindgren.

Trimble’s music has likely never before been performed at Konserthuset Stockholm.
Joan Trimble was a remarkable figure – an active composer and touring piano soloist. She also taught at the Royal College of Music in London while serving as editor-in-chief of The Impartial Reporter, a newspaper in her hometown of Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. Of her music, Trimble once said: “It belongs to no school or era. What matters is to express oneself freely.” That freedom comes through in her Phantasy Trio from 1940.
Like Joan Trimble, Cécile Chaminade was a touring concert pianist, performing her own works. In recent years, Chaminade has also gained renewed attention for her many songs. In this concert, pianist Anders Kilström – professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm – takes on the piano part in Chaminade’s dramatic and powerful second piano trio, composed in the late 1880s. He is joined by Mikael Sjögren, associate principal cellist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and Patrik Swedrup, former second concertmaster of the orchestra.

Dowland was a contemporary of Shakespeare, and we’ll hear a selection of his beautiful pieces originally composed for lute.
Joakim Agnas is principal trumpet of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a composer and arranger. Here, he presents his brass quintet version of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale – music full of character and wit, with echoes of Viennese waltz, ragtime and jazz. Agnas has also composed the opening piece of the concert, Tango – music he describes as strongly inspired by Stravinsky.
A special treat in this programme is the chance to compare Stravinsky’s version of Ragtime from The Soldier’s Tale with Scott Joplin’s The Easy Winners – one of the biggest hits of the ragtime era.

She wrote Duo for Violin and Cello for one of her close friends. The piece is intended as a tribute to friendship, with the various movements portraying the bonds that connect people: laughter, compassion, adventure – and sometimes a bit of silliness.
Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály wrote his Duo for Violin and Cello in 1914, as tensions in Europe escalated and the First World War loomed. The sense of threat is also present in the music, especially in the charged slow middle movement. Like his compatriot and friend Béla Bartók, Kodály had a deep interest in folk music, which he integrated powerfully with his own expressive and personal voice. This influence is especially evident in the wild dance of the final movement.
Anna Stefánsson has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2005 and frequently appears in Konserthuset’s chamber music series. Here she is joined by Josep Castanyer Alonso – also an active chamber musician and the first graduate of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra Academy to go on to win a permanent place in the orchestra, in 2019.

One of the most common varieties is the Valencia orange – juicy, sweet, and with a thin peel. “Nature is so simple, and yet so extraordinary.” In her piece Valencia, the image of an orange is evoked through gently undulating overtones and slowly flowing chords and melodies.
The Piano Quintet in C minor is one of Gabriel Fauré’s final works – music that bears all the wisdom of a composer born while Chopin and Berlioz were still active, yet who lived long enough to witness the birth of twentieth-century modernism. This quintet is full of passion and joy, despite the fact that by this time Fauré was almost completely deaf and aware that he had little time left.
Four string players from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra are joined here by pianist Terés Löf – one of Sweden’s most distinguished pianists, who has performed as a soloist with many of the country’s orchestras. She has appeared at Konserthuset Stockholm on several occasions, both as an orchestral soloist and in chamber music concerts.

Fortunately, her music is now enjoying a well-deserved revival. One example is her exquisite Romance, which was such a success at its premiere – performed by Beach herself together with violinist Maud Powell – that the audience demanded an immediate encore.
Johannes Brahms was in the postcard-perfect village of Pörtschach am Wörthersee when he composed his enchantingly romantic First Sonata for Violin and Piano – one of the great masterpieces in the repertoire for the duo. It is sometimes referred to as the Rain Sonata, as Brahms reuses a theme from his own song Regenlied (“Rain Song”) at the end.
Emma Agnas de Frumerie, violinist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, performs together with Peter Friis Johansson – one of Scandinavia’s most acclaimed concert pianists. He is a regular guest at Konserthuset Stockholm, most recently in 2024 with a solo recital in the Main Hall.

He initially performed traditional Hungarian folk music, but over the years has broadened his scope to include both classical and jazz. In 2023, he was admitted to the prestigious Liszt Academy in Budapest to study classical cimbalom, and in the same year became a member of two prominent ensembles: Elán, which explores the folk music of Central and Eastern Europe, and Intergeese, a jazz trio performing original compositions.
At this concert, we meet the classical Áron Horváth – with a jazz twist. Hungarian composer László Sáry’s evocative and almost minimalist Lassú és friss (“Slow and Brisk”) is contrasted with a suite by Johann Sebastian Bach, originally written for solo cello. The concert also features a new work by British composer Charlotte Bray, whose music, according to The Telegraph, is characterised by “great beauty and emotional depth.” The programme concludes with a brand-new piece by Hungarian jazz musician Emma Nagy.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the classical stars of tomorrow – today. Rising Stars is a unique and forward-looking collaboration between 23 of Europe’s leading concert halls, all part of the ECHO – European Concert Hall Organisation. Each year, a handful of young artists and ensembles from across the continent are selected to tour the network’s venues and meet international audiences. Time and again, Rising Stars artists have gone on to enjoy successful international careers. Áron Horváth is nominated by Müpa Budapest and the Wiener Konzerthaus.

At a previous soup concert, the duo played music by Beethoven and Rebecca Clarke. This time, we have the great pleasure of hearing them in César Franck’s Sonata for Violin and Piano – a much-loved work that many consider among the finest in the genre.
The sonata was originally promised to Franz Liszt’s daughter Cosima, but Franck never followed through. Nearly thirty years later, when he finally completed it, the piece was an instant success. And it’s easy to understand why: the four movements offer a wonderfully evocative journey, carrying the listener between tender idyll and stormy passion.
Fritz Kreisler (1875–1962) is still regarded as one of the world’s greatest violin virtuosos. He also composed a number of works – often in a nostalgic style, frequently with an Italian touch. That is certainly true of Prelude and Allegro, subtitled “in the style of Pugnani.” A tribute to Gaetano Pugnani and the violin playing of the Baroque era, it is filtered through the eyes of a Romantic. Kreisler initially claimed to have discovered a lost manuscript by Pugnani, but it was later revealed to be his own composition.

With her warm voice and deeply personal expression, Isabella Lundgren has established herself as one of the country’s most acclaimed jazz singers.
Carl Bagge’s sensitive and nuanced piano playing has long been a central part of their collaboration. Together, they move effortlessly between classic jazz tradition, Swedish ballads, and idiosyncratic interpretations of both American standards and the Swedish songbook. Lundgren and Bagge have worked together on critically acclaimed albums and performed on some of Sweden’s most prestigious stages.

Together they perform a delightful trio by a truly intriguing and often overlooked composer: Marcelle de Manziarly (1899–1989). Born in Ukraine, she later studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger before moving to the United States, where she worked as a pianist, conductor and composer.
Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů spent many years in Paris, where he was influenced by the French group of composers known as Les Six. They sought to move beyond both impressionism and late romanticism. In this trio for flute, cello and piano, we hear Martinů’s own response: playful music full of rhythmic vitality and melodic imagination.

Clara Schumann’s Romances for clarinet and piano are filled with melancholy, warmth and intensity. Originally composed for violin and piano, they were dedicated to the legendary violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom Clara frequently performed.
Exceptionally gifted British composer William Hurlstone died in 1906 at just thirty years old. By then, he had just been appointed professor at the Royal College of Music in London and had already composed several high-quality chamber works – including this life-affirming sonata for bassoon and piano.
Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for oboe and piano has become a central work in the oboe repertoire. Dedicated to fellow composer Sergei Prokofiev, it is filled with melancholy, elegance and playfulness. Poulenc died not long after completing the sonata, which became the final work he ever wrote.

In this soup concert, he takes the stage together with a string quartet of orchestra members.
The programme features music by Czech pianist and composer Josef Labor – specifically his charming and playful Piano Quintet in E minor. Labor was active in Vienna and a well-known figure in the city’s vibrant musical life at the turn of the 20th century. He was a friend of Brahms, Richard Strauss, Bruckner, Clara Schumann, and Gustav and Alma Mahler.
However, Labor was not at the forefront of musical innovation – instead, he drew inspiration from the classical tradition of Beethoven and early Romantics such as Robert Schumann. In this quintet, he chose the same instrumentation as Schubert’s famous Trout Quintet – with piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, rather than the more common two violins, viola, cello and piano setup.
