Stråkkvartetter
Six Saturdays at 16.00
The string quartet is perhaps the most beloved form of intimate chamber music – ever since the days of Joseph Haydn, often referred to as “the father of the string quartet.”
Each season, some of the world’s finest quartets come to Konserthuset. This time, we welcome Sweden’s Dahlkvist Quartet, Finland’s Meta4, the Czech Pavel Haas Quartet, the multinational Simply Quartet and France’s Quatuor Diotima. The season culminates with the brilliant Spanish ensemble Cuarteto Casals!

This quote inspired American composer Gabriella Smith to write her Carrot Revolution – “a tribute to the ability to find new ways of approaching older artistic forms and expressions, such as the string quartet, a 250-year-old genre.”
Many associate Sibelius with epic symphonies and his grand violin concerto. But he also wrote a wealth of music in smaller forms, including a string quartet with the subtitle Voces intimae – “Intimate Voices.” It’s as if we are hearing his private reflections on the grandeur, mystery and joy of life.
Between these two works, the Dahlkvist Quartet performs a string quartet by the exceptionally gifted Swedish composer Bo Linde (1933–70) from Gävle. With his flowing, melodic language, Linde went his own way during a post-war period otherwise dominated by austerity and modernist ideals. His String Quartet Op. 9 is a milestone in his catalogue: at just 20 years old, he had already found a distinctive voice in impressive fashion.
The Dahlkvist Quartet consists of Kersti Gräntz and Gudrun Dahlkvist on violins, Jon Dahlkvist on viola, and Hanna Dahlkvist – also a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra – on cello.

The quartet has received numerous awards, including first prize at the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna. Now they return to Konserthuset Stockholm for a concert where intimacy and emotional depth take centre stage.
Almost a century has passed since Leoš Janáček wrote his String Quartet No. 2, Intimate Letters – a passionate musical love letter to Kamila Stösslová, the woman who became his lifelong muse. The work brims with emotion – from burning desire and longing to pain and hope – in music that is as spontaneous as it is profoundly moving.
Sally Beamish’s Nine Fragments (2018) is inspired by Robert Schumann’s first string quartet, as well as by the relationship between Robert and his wife Clara. The work consists of nine very short movements – each like a shattered mirror reflecting a particular moment in Schumann’s original, with glimpses of everything from melancholy to euphoria.
Robert Schumann was in a state of bliss when composing his first string quartet. It was during his intense “chamber music year”, and the music invites the listener on a romantic journey filled with lyrical melodies and emotional intensity – all shaped by the love he felt for Clara. Schumann himself organised the premiere of his Quartets Nos. 1–3 as a birthday gift to Clara on her 23rd birthday.

This concert begins with the powerful and deeply personal Fifth String Quartet by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů.
In the score, Martinů included several private comments – among them reflections on his close relationship with his student, the highly gifted composer Vítězslava Kaprálová, who was 25 years his junior. Kaprálová was on the verge of becoming one of Europe’s most significant compositional voices when she tragically passed away at the age of just 25. She had only recently turned 20 when she composed the String Quartet No. 1 heard here – music filled with both optimism and a sense of longing.
Toward the end of his career, Antonín Dvořák was appointed professor of composition in New York. In 1895, shortly before returning to Europe and his beloved Bohemia, he began work on what would become his fourteenth and final string quartet. Here, he left all traces of America behind – geographically as well as musically. In this magnificent work, the light shines through the finely chiselled melodies, and the final movement is not only the crowning moment of the quartet, but one of the great highlights of his chamber music output.

Founded in Shanghai in 2008, the quartet is now primarily based in Europe, with performances at venues such as Wigmore Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
They open this concert with Emilie Mayer’s String Quartet in G major – music by one of the most prominent women composers of the 19th century. Mayer was often referred to as “the female Beethoven,” and her music is marked by striking drama and melodic inventiveness. Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade is a short but exquisite piece in which lyricism and playfulness blend beautifully. Inspired by Italian folk music, it is a sparkling miniature filled with sunlit charm and elegance.
The concert concludes with Johannes Brahms’ String Quartet No. 2, where passionate melodies meet Hungarian dance rhythms. It is one of his most intimate chamber works – a contrast to the more overtly dramatic first quartet. Here, warmth and introspection take centre stage, and the music is imbued with subtle expressiveness and deep emotional power.

Each phase marked a remarkable leap forward in the art of the string quartet. One of the most celebrated of these is the multifaceted and profound Opus 130, from his late period – a work filled with beloved melodies, striking harmonies and passionate outbursts. It is performed here by the French ensemble Quatuor Diotima, who take on this truly grand and monumental quartet.
Arnold Schoenberg is often associated with twelve-tone music, but in his youth he was strongly influenced by Beethoven, Brahms – and particularly Mozart. “I owe a great deal to Mozart. If you listen to my string quartets, you can hear that I’ve borrowed much directly from him. And I’m proud of that,” he once said. Nowhere is this more evident than in the early quartet presented here.
Between Schoenberg and Beethoven, we hear music by Swedish composer Lisa Streich. She enjoys international success and was featured in Konserthuset Stockholm’s 2024 Composer Weekend. She has described her music as sculpting with an orchestra or ensemble – where sound generates a kind of choreography that invites not only the listener but also the viewer. Here, we hear her Sternestill, premiered in 2022 in Strasbourg by none other than Quatuor Diotima.

During the Beethoven year in 2020, the quartet performed the composer’s complete string quartets over six concerts throughout the year. At their most recent visit in 2022, they presented Bach’s masterpiece Die Kunst der Fuge (The Art of Fugue).
Now, Cuarteto Casals returns with late string quartets by Joseph Haydn and Franz Schubert, framing a 2024 work by Spanish-American composer Elisenda Fábregas. Her Fiery Earth draws on Spanish influences and is based on a very old liturgical melody.
Haydn’s masterful Quartet in D major, Op. 76 No. 5, comes from his final set of string quartets, while Schubert’s Fifteenth Quartet was his last. In this music, it is as if Schubert seeks to encapsulate the full range of human emotion – with breathtaking melodies, playfulness, reflection, and passion.
