The Future – Care and Conservation
The exterior of Konserthuset Stockholm has undergone extensive renovation. The work was completed in summer 2026.
Konserthuset Stockholm underwent extensive façade renovation in 2025/2026. It involved far more than a fresh coat of paint – it was a major undertaking requiring skilled craftsmanship, with every detail carefully attended to and consideration given to both the building’s history and its future.
Work began on the façades facing Hötorget and Kungsgatan, before continuing on the sides facing Sveavägen and, respectively, the entrance to the underground garage and the Hötorg skyscrapers.
Property Manager Jeanette Hultstrand followed the work closely on a daily basis.
”Throughout the project, a great deal of work went into restoring and inspecting the woodwork and wrought-iron details, as well as, of course, repairing cracks in the façade”, says Jeanette Hultstrand.
All stonework and decorative details were cleaned, repaired and repointed. The characteristic copper elements were also inspected and, in some cases, replaced. On the Sveavägen side, the previously bricked-up balconies were fitted with glazed balcony doors. There is still only a brick wall behind them, Jeanette Hultstrand explains, but they make the façade feel more alive.
Changes were also made at street level. Windows and doors were replaced, and the doors were fitted with newly cast handles based on the originals.
”The façade lighting was adjusted as well: we achieved a more neutral light that shows the façade to better advantage. Inside the building, electrical wiring was also installed to points on the façade where new digital poster displays are being mounted.”
The shop signage was also updated: the former horizontal blue metal signs were replaced by signs in the windows and projecting signs on the façade.
”At the corner of Kungsgatan and Sveavägen, the more delicate original staircase was uncovered. It was a fascinating discovery to find that it had been there all along, beneath a more modern staircase and ramp. This brought us closer to architect Ivar Tengbom’s original vision.”
Konserthuset Stockholm is one of Stockholm’s best-loved landmarks. The façade renovation was carried out with great respect for both the building’s history and its future – preserving its splendour for generations to come.
The final inspection took place on 30 June 2026.
The façade renovation was made possible by a unique donation of SEK 100 million from the Erling-Persson Foundation.
